Setting Up NetDrive
NetDrive can be installed on your home or laptop Windows-based computer.
It duplicates some of the functionality of the Novell client that is used on office and lab computers.
If you haven't done so already, DOWNLOAD the NetDrive client and install it, then we'll begin the configuration process.
Okay, let's begin.
-
Start by launching NetDrive from your Start menu (go to Start, Programs, NetDrive and choose NetDrive)
-
Click on the New Site button in the lower left
-
Fill in the name of site. We suggest S - Science Server Drives
And for the site address, fill in science.smith.edu/oneNet/NetStorage
(Note: Capitalization IS important!) and click Finish
-
Next, fill in the "Server Type". We'll be using WebDAV
And set a "Drive" for the server to map to. Going with our theme, we suggest S:
It's up to you whether you click "Connect at login/startup". We suggest leaving it unchecked.
And we suggest you leave the "Add to tray connect menu" setting checked.
-
1. Uncheck the "Anonymous/Public Login" box
2. and fill in your Username.
3. Unless you are the ONLY one using this computer (and this is NOT a LAPTOP!)
Please UNCHECK the "Save Password" box!
4. Then click the Connect button in the upper-right.
-
A login box appears. Fill in your password and click OK.
-
A new Windows Explorer window will open and display the contents of your new S: "drive".
(Next time, you'll be able to simply click the "Connect" button to connect to Science OR
right-click on the NetDrive icon in the system tray (lower-right corner) and choose
Connect To then S: - Science Center Drives)
-
The new drive will show up in your Network Drives in My Computer and you can
open, edit, save, or copy files just as you would from on campus. Note that
the speeds could be significantly slower, of course.
-
To LOG OUT from the server, locate Science in My Computer, right-click, and select Disconnect
(shutting down your PC will also log you out).
